WW1 Centenary Week

Last week we marked the Centenary of World War 1. We learnt about the conditions of the trenches, studied poetry and practised marching drills. Have a look at our scary soldier faces!

Mountain Outdoor Skills

Eagles Class had a fantastic time learning and practising some outdoor skills that can be used to survive in a mountainous region. We learned how to tie knots (some of us got creative and in a bit of a tangle!), spark a flint, create a shelter and climb a rope ladder. We finished off our learning with marshmallows and welsh cakes cooked on the camp fire, and hearing stories about Snowdon and Sir Edmund Hilary.

Outdoor Learning Day

We had a fabulous day of Outdoor Learning, taking all of our lessons outside. We did some reading, used our senses to collect some ideas for descriptive writing, tested out our maths skills on the playground, and used the Forest as inspiration to compose musical masterpieces.

Black History Month – A Visit from Vernon Samuels

Eagles Class were lucky enough to meet Olympian, singer and local businessman Vernon Samuels as part of our learning about Black History Month. He inspired the model text for our current writing topic of descriptive narratives. We performed our model text for him, detailing his qualifying triple jump for the 1988 Summer Olympics. He was able to give us a real insight into what the actual event was like, enabling us to collect lots of interesting vocabulary the we are now using in our own writing. He also gave an assembly to the school, talking about why BHM is so important and the people that inspire him everyday. Did you know that his Dad was Bristol’s first black bus driver? Have a look at our model text and story map we created as a class.

Rivers Trust Visit

As part of our learning for our topic, we were visited by a member of the Rivers Trust. We learnt about the types of pollution that can get washed into our rivers and the impact it has on the environment. Armed with this knowledge, we took to the streets as eco-warriors, spreading our message through posters and yellow chalk fish drawn next to the drains – a reminder to the residents of Iron Acton to think about how we can protect our local environment and rivers.

Class Charter

At the start of the school year, Eagles Class wrote a Class Charter to remind us about our behaviour and learning. As citizens of our school community, we thought that these were some important things we needed to remember. The Classroom Contract reads as follows: Don’t shout out – put your hand up Look after resources Respect others Be helpful Challenge yourself Enjoy yourself Do your homework on time Keep the classroom tidy Look after each other
